The Safety and Environmental Coordinator is responsible for creating, with Management assistance, a culture of safety within the plant. The Coordinator is responsible for assisting in development and implementation of safety and environmental policies and procedures onsite as well as working with the division safety team (comprised of the Division Environmental and Safety Manager, and plant site safety and environmental coordinators across the millwork division) to develop and maintain a consistent safety driven culture. This position will lead efforts in data collection and analytics for both safety and environmental purposes. The role will work in partnership with leaders to implement best practices and monitor compliance with environmental and safety requirements .  The Safety and Environmental Coordinator shall monitor and advise the facility staff on safety and environmental compliance issues. Such issues include but not limited to following: safety regulation compliance, hazardous materials management, hazardous waste management, storm-water management, waste water management; spill prevention planning (SPPC), sampling, air emissions regulations.

 
Essential Duties, Responsibilities, Expectations and Performance Measures What measures or metrics will the individual be measured on and what level of performance is required?  Other duties may be assigned.
SAFETY
  • Create and implement safety plans while ensuring that they are being followed daily
  • Conduct New Hire Orientation and training on all essential safety policies
  • Educate employees on safety standards and expectations as well as safe machinery operation
  • Conduct monthly safety training for all employees
  • Implement safety procedures and follow up to be sure they are followed
  • Organize Plant Safety Committee and support hourly employees in leading the PSC
  • Maintain proper safety equipment and personal protective equipment for employees.
  • Manage the Hazard Communication process and Safety Data Sheets.
  • Attend safety walks and inspections before or during each project to analyze safety risks Daily safety walks through facility
  • Provide recommendations for improving safety in the workplace
  • Investigate accidents that occur onsite and identify possible causes of the accident
  • Maintain documentation of the company's safety procedures, accidents and related events
  • Incident evaluation and analysis

ENVIRONMENTAL
  • Update, implement, and periodically review an organizational environmental plan (e.g., obtain, update, and maintain plans, permits, and standard operating procedures (SOP))
  • Prepare, review, and update environmental investigation reports
  •  Analyze scientific data and do quality-control checks
  • Monitor progress of environmental improvement programs
  • Inspect facility and programs to ensure organizational compliance with environmental regulations
  • Educate personnel regarding environmental compliance

Knowledge/Skills/Education and Continuous Training
What skills/certification/education must the individual have/maintain/gain?  Include any degrees, certifications, and licenses required.
Education / Experience / Certification
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience preferably in manufacturing environment
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safety principles and OSHA requirements.
  • Knowledge of DEQ processes and ability to read and interpret environmental regulations and statutes
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, effectively, and efficiently.

Reporting Line and Supervisory Responsibilities
The Safety & and Environmental Coordinator reports directly to the Human Resource  Manager of the facility.
 
Physical Demands and Work Environment
What working conditions or physical functions are normally required to perform the essential functions of the job?
The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical office environment, however, this person is expected to also be on  the manufacturing floor/environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
This is a full-time position. This position occasionally requires long hours and occasional weekend work.
